Computer coding (AKA programming) is becoming more important now than ever before. ICT-related jobs and career opportunities are expanding at a rate some have estimated to two times faster than any other type of job. Coding has been adopted into the UK curriculum, and many schools in South Africa and countries around the world are beginning to recognise that coding is an important literacy for pupils to have, and including it in their curricula.  In this video, Linda Bradfield demonstrates how to use BeeBots to teach coding to young learners.

Edit Microsystems have several tools available for you to introduce coding into the classroom from an early age

BeeBot

The BeeBot is a programmable floor robot that puts sequential planning into a child’s hands from a young age. The simple and child friendly layout is a great starting point for teaching control, directional language and programming to young children, suitable from Grade R upwards.

Design your own mats or use the pre-designed Bee-Bot Mats to have your learners navigate the BeeBot through a fairytale land, a busy street, or even through numbers or letters of the alphabet. The BeeBot can be used to teach a range of skills and lessons, with students learning sequencing and spatial awareness incidentally.

BeeBot Activities

There are three sets of BeeBot-based lesson activity software – where you program a virtual BeeBot to move in a virtual space on the computer screen.

These can form an excellent bridge from the physical bee-bot to computer coding.

ProBot

The Pro-Bot is an advanced version of the BeeBot, incorporating measurement and angles into the sequential planning learned on the BeeBot.

Routes taken can be drawn using the simple pen mechanism and a standard felt tip pen. There are fully functional headlights along with a bumper sensor. Pro-Bot can operate independently or alongside your PC with our software.

Yenka Programming

Yenka Programming is a fun way to introduce programming using avatars, or simple on-screen animated characters using flowcharts. Choreograph your characters to perform complex dance routines.

Yenka is available as a free trial for 15 days.
